Although Levoit air purifiers are very easy to use and maintain, there is always something easy to miss, so I have written this simple how-to and troubleshooting guide, which I believe can be helpful if you have issues with your Levoit.

Levoit air purifiers generally come with a 1-year warranty, which can be extended to 2 years by registering the device on the official website. Not every malfunction is a malfunction; the warranty doesn’t cover every unusual situation that happens to you. I will cover some of the problems in this article, so keep reading.

How To Set Up Levoit Air Purifier?
Of course, not every air purifier is the same, and not every air purifier is set up in the same way. However, I have tested almost all available Levoit air purifiers so far, and I can say that they mostly follow the same principles and require the same procedure before the first start.
As I said, the preparation for starting a Levoit air purifier is almost identical on all models, so for each new Levoit air purifier you buy, you will need to do the following steps:
- The first thing you need to do is remove the Levoit air purifier from its packaging.
- The next step is to prepare the filters, which, with Levoit, are usually wrapped in plastic film and MUST be unwrapped. To do this, you typically open the lid on the bottom or front of the device and remove the filter. Note that the cover on the LV-PUR131 is on the back.
- After removing and unpacking the filter from the device, put it back in the device and close the lid.
- Now that the device is ready to work, it is recommended that you place the Levoit air purifier at least 15-20 inches away from the wall or other objects, plug it in, and turn it on.
Suppose you have purchased one of the Levoit smart devices. In that case, I recommend that you download the VeSync app on your smart device and connect your Levoit to the app immediately after setup. This will give you many additional options and make it easier to use your air purifier.
What if You Have Problems Connecting Your Levoit With the VeSync Smart App?
Connecting your Levoit to the VeSync app is a very smooth process that doesn’t require advanced techniques. You can easily check this by visiting the Android or iOS store and checking the app’s rating, which is rated much better than some apps from other air purifier manufacturers.
However, there can always be connection problems, so here are some solutions that can help with the connection problems.
If you can’t connect the VeSync app and the Levoit device, I suggest checking that your internet modem is supported and works at 2.4GHz. If it works on 5GHz, switch it to 2.4GHz and connect it again.
In addition, try to keep the devices as close to the modem as possible, especially if you are using a 5GHz modem, which has a much lower range by default. If none of this works, try using a hotspot from another smart device as a modem to connect the VeSync app and the Levoit device.
What If Your Levoit Air Purifier Smells Bad?
A few users I’ve spoken with through the Air Purifier First website or YouTube channel have complained of unpleasant odors from the filter after unpacking it. Personally, I haven’t experienced this problem with the Levoit air purifier, but I have with some others.
The thing is that the filters have just left the factory, have not been ventilated, and are immediately packed, so the unpleasant smell remains in them. The recommendation and solution to this problem is to leave the unit running for at least 24 hours in a place where you are not around, ventilating the filter and making it fresh.
If this method does not work, leave it for another 24 hours, and if it still fails, I suggest you request a replacement filter directly from Levoit.
How Long Should You Keep Your Levoit Running?
This is a question that bothers many users. The logic is this: Levoit air purifiers mostly use True HEPA filters, which trap particles but don’t kill them. This means that if the room where the air purifier is located is exposed to certain air pollutants, the air will start to worsen as soon as you switch off the air purifier. Therefore, I recommend using the air purifier 24/7 or turning it off periodically if you think the air is clean enough.
Otherwise, you can use Auto Mode, which is a built-in feature in many new Levoit air purifiers.
As for the durability of the air purifier itself, it will last for years, and you don’t have to worry about running it all day.
How Long Does a Levoit Filter Last?
The filters on Levoit air purifiers aren’t washable and need to be replaced from time to time. Small and medium-sized Levoit filters last, on average, about 6 months, but for some larger models, the filters can last up to 12 months.
Fortunately, almost every Levoit air purifier has a filter reset indicator that will tell you when it’s time to change the filter. This means you don’t have to worry when it’s time to change, as the air purifier will track it for you.
How Do You Change the Filter on Levoit Air Purifiers?
As I mentioned before, Levoit does not use washable filters (except the pre-filters on Vital 100S and Vital 200S), which means that the filters on these air purifiers need to be changed from time to time.
Fortunately, the filter reset indicator will let you know when it’s time to change the filter.
The replacement process is straightforward, and usually consists of just a few simple steps, and is very similar to all Levoit air purifiers.
- To begin with, the filter cover must be opened and the old filter removed.
- Then it would be a good idea to vacuum the inside of the unit and remove accumulated dust particles, hair, and similar dirt.
- The next step is to unpack the new filter, insert it into the device, and close the lid.
- Finally, you just need to reset the filter reset indicator.
I would recommend everyone not to rely entirely on the filter reset indicator and to check the filters from time to time if they are dirtier than they should be and that they should be replaced before the recommended time.
How Do You Clean a Pre-filter on Levoit Air Purifiers?
Levoit usually has a specific type of pre-filter, which is usually a nylon mesh attached to the HEPA filter. This pre-filter stops large particles from entering HEPA and other filters, prolonging the HEPA filter’s life and improving overall air cleaning quality.
You have to clean a pre-filter at least two times per month. It would be best to vacuum it or clean it with a dry cloth. If you want to learn more about maintaining pre-filters, I have recently written a decent article about pre-filters and how to clean them.
On some other models, the pre-filter is removable, which makes cleaning and maintenance easier. In fact, cleaning a pre-filter is a must and something I strongly recommend.
How Do You Reset the Levoit Air Purifier Red Light?
I think this is the most common question and problem people face with their Levoit air purifiers. Many wonder how to fix the red light, but there is nothing to fix here, as a red light on your Levoit air purifier usually means that it is time to replace the filter. To fix this, simply replace the old filter with a new one. After doing so, make sure to reset the light according to the manufacturer’s instructions (refer to the table below).
To reset the red light (filter reset/check indicator) on your Levoit air purifier, press and hold the filter reset button for about 3 to 5 seconds. If this method doesn’t work, try resetting the indicator with the device turned off but still plugged into the wall outlet. This method is necessary for some models, such as the LV-H128, which requires resetting the indicator while the device is switched off.
The table below shows the Filter Reset Indicator reset procedure for all Levoit air purifiers.

What’s good to know: you can reset the filter reset indicator on some newer Levoit air purifiers through the VeSync smart app.
Levoit Air Purifier Fan Not Working
The biggest problem you may encounter is of a technical nature, such as, in this case, a situation where the fan is not working.
Unfortunately, suppose you have correctly connected the device to the power supply and checked the adapter (some Levoit air purifiers have it). In that case, I don’t think there is a solution to this problem other than to contact Levoit support directly and claim the warranty.
If this problem occurs, I suggest that you do not disassemble the unit or try to fix anything yourself, as this could invalidate your warranty.
I have the same advice if the Levoit air purifier does not work if neither the LEDs nor any of the buttons on the device work.

Although I have answered almost all the problems users encounter with Levoit air purifiers, you can always encounter some less specific faults. However, to keep your air purifier working without issues and offer high-quality air quality in return, it is always best to do regular maintenance. I happened to find a Levoit LV PUR131 secondhand. When I plug it in, it chimes and the power symbol glows red but the controls are unresponsive and it doesn’t seem to power on at all.
There is a glitch with the LV-PUR131 model that many users complained about. You can do two things: return it to the seller or contact Levoit and ask for a warranty (replacement unit).

My whole house sq. ft. is 1500. I have 2 – Levoit 100 in the living room and 200s in my room, which is 300 sq. ft. I bought that 100 6 months ago, and i haven’t replaced the air filters, but I took them all out once a month to clean up. Recently, all of them showed a red light on the ring and bad air quality in the app. I just changed the air filter for one of the 100, but the problem is still there. Please help.
You need to reset the filter rest indicator. I suggest doing it through the VeSync app.
Also, if you haven’t done it, I would suggest cleaning air quality sensors on all the air purifiers you have.
On my VeSync app, it shows 999 bad indoor air quality. I have never seen this in the past month. May I know if there is an issue with the unit or is it the air is just that bad. Note that I am using this in an enclosed room for more than 5 hours and it is still 999 bad indoor air quality….
Have you cleaned the air quality sensor? Maybe it got too dirty, and because of that, you are getting a higher value in the app.
Cause of ring of blue lights usually on top of my air purifier now red.
It means the air quality in your room is poor. You should switch your air purifier to the max or use a larger one if your current model isn’t powerful enough for the size of your room.
I have an LV-H132 and would like to control it from a switched wall outlet. But when I turn the wall switch on to power the Levoit, it doesn’t start. It beeps once and sits there and does nothing until I press the button.
Is there a way to get it to start when the wall switch activates the outlet?
Unfortunately, there is no way to control the Levoit LV-H132 via the smart plug.
I have a Levoit Air Purifier LV-H132. After changing the filter, the “on” light remains red! Is it safe to use? The red filter light disappeared when I held it down 3 seconds!
That’s okay. After changing the filter, you have to reset the indicator manually, and you just did that.

Should the air quality light be on blue all the time? Even when it states 4? What air quality levels mak colour change? For example if it goes under 5 should it change to red?
If it is blue all the time, then the air quality in your place is great. However, try triggering the sensor by using the air purifier when you are cooking, for example. If it still doesn’t change color, then it’s time to call Levoit for warranty.

You should first turn off the air purifier, then press and hold the power button to reset the filter reset indicator.

You have to reset the filter reset indicator on your Levoit LV-PUR131. The procedure is to press and hold the reset button, which is located behind vents on the side of the air purifier. I have explained the procedure in the video review you can find on the URL below:
Levoit LV-PUR131 Replacing Filter
Same here. Changed filter (even though it wasn’t dirty), reset the filter button, and the air quality indicator still glows red/lethal/you’regonnadiesoon. Really annoying, and it’s out of warranty. Since I know the filter is brand new I just stopped worrying about it, turned off the air quality indicator light, and let it go. (But it’s still annoying.)
I also had a 131s quit working days before the warranty expired. Red light would turn on and then fade.
Got a new one without too much trouble. A few months later I took apart the old one, and found two blown 16 volt capacitors on the 24 volt power supply.
I’m not an electronics expert by any means, but usually when something electrical of mine fails, particularly where it still clearly has some power going through it, 50% of the time it’s blown capacitors.
It seems a common problem, at least with the 131-s, is it just stops working. Mine has – the air quality sensor lights up red then turns yellow and the change filter is lit up and that is it. I changed the filters, depressed the reset button, and – nada. None of the buttons work, nothing happens. My two year warranty is up either today or tomorrow – bought April 26, 2020 and tomorrow is April 26, 2022. SIGH!!!
