Blueair Air Purifiers Maintenance – Guide (+ Red Light Fix)

Blueair is one of the leading manufacturers of air purifiers in the market. It is an international company, with its air purifiers being sold worldwide. The entire Blueair ecosystem promotes the importance of healthy indoor air; however, to accomplish that, it’s usually not enough to simply purchase an air purifier. You should properly maintain it, clean it, and use it!

In this article, I will describe the most common problems people encounter with Blueair air purifiers and provide answers to many unanswered questions, as well as suggestions on how to use your Blueair air purifier most effectively.

Additionally, I will address the most common issue regarding Blueair air purifiers: the Blueair red light. You will learn tips and tricks on how to prolong your air purifier’s life, how to preserve its filters, and how to clean them properly.

But before we move on to more challenging topics, let’s discuss what you need to consider immediately after unboxing your Blueair air purifier.

How to Setup a Blueair Air Purifier?

The setup and installation may differ depending on the specific Blueair model you have, but the procedure is almost always the same. Every Blueair air purifier, except for those in the Blue Pure series, comes with a packed filter, which you must prepare/unpack before starting the device for the first time.

To do this, simply pull out the filter from its housing, then remove it from the plastic wrap and put it back into the air purifier. Additionally, you may remove all protective foils on the device.

After completing the filter preparation procedure, place your air purifier in the desired location, following best practices for air purifier placement, plug it in, and turn it on.

Furthermore, if your Blueair has the option to connect with a smart app, I recommend connecting it to the app, as that will unlock many additional features and capabilities for your device.

What you Should Know About Your Blueair

Generalizing the maintenance procedure for Blueair air purifiers is extremely difficult, primarily because this company offers several different air purifier series: Blue Pure, DustMagnet, Protect, Classic, Sense+, and Pro series.

Each series has its characteristics and specifications, and I recommend reading and understanding their specific user manuals to ensure you don’t miss anything important. For example, the Blue Pure series is the most minimalistic, requiring the least maintenance, and typically, the air purifiers in this series are the easiest to use.

Additionally, it is helpful to know that Blueair has different warranty policies for each Blueair series. To clarify this, I have prepared a table below, in which I have accurately presented the warranty period for each Blueair series.

Blueair SeriesExtendable Warranty To
Blue Pure2-year
DustMagnet5-year
Protect5-year
Classic5-year
Pro5-year

I strongly recommend registering your air purifier on the Blueair website immediately after purchasing it to ensure you don’t lose your warranty and also to extend it to the maximum duration.

Every Blueair air purifier comes with a one-year warranty, regardless of whether you register it on their website or not.

How to Connect the Blueair Air Purifier to a Smart App?

The Blueair smart app offers a variety of features that can be a fantastic addition to your everyday use of an air purifier. After you have connected the air purifier with the app, you gain the ability to in-depth monitoring indoor and outdoor air quality, remotely control the device, use voice control, and much more.

Before connecting your device with the app, you must download the Blueair app from the Google Play Store, App Store, Huawei Store, or Tencent.

The process of connecting an air purifier with the app is straightforward. After downloading the app, you have to create a Blueair account and then simply follow on the screen instructions.

The most common issue people face when trying to connect their Blueair air purifiers with the app is the Wi-Fi connection problem. This is because you must use a 2.4 GHz network in order to connect a Blueair air purifier with the app. Additionally, you should place your air purifier as close to the modem as possible when attempting to connect it to the app.

Of course, there are many other issues people encounter when trying to connect with the smart app, so if your issue is not listed here, feel free to contact me through the comment section below the article, and I will do my best to answer and help you as soon as possible.

Only app-enabled Blueair air purifiers work with the smart app. These include Protect, DustMagnet™, and some Classic models.

Cleaning the Pre-filter and Regular Filter Replacing

The pre-filter is the first filtration stage in every Blueair air purifier and is often the dirtiest layer.

Usually, the purpose of a pre-filter is to capture large particles such as pet hair, large dust particles, human hair, and similar particles, thereby protecting and prolonging the life of other filters in the air purifier (primarily the HEPA/Particle filters).

Some Blueair air purifiers use washable pre-filters, such as those in the Blue Pure series, which are easier to clean, as you can simply put them in the washing machine and wash them. Other types of pre-filters aren’t washable, so you should clean them periodically using a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth.

I have written an in-depth guide on the importance of a pre-filter and how to clean it, which I strongly recommend reading! Blueair air purifiers can’t detect when it’s time to replace the pre-filter, so you have to check them periodically and clean them approximately twice monthly to maintain the air purifier’s optimal performance.

In addition to the pre-filter, Blueair air purifiers include various filtration technologies, such as Particle filters, HEPA filters, SmokeStop filters, Carbon filters, and more. These filters require regular replacement and aren’t washable. However, the difference between these filters and pre-filter maintenance is that the first ones are changeable.

I have created a table that shows the filter life and approximate replacement periods for different Blueair air purifiers.

ModelFilter Life
HealthProtect™ (all models)6-12 months
DustMagnet™ (all models)6-12 months
Classic 200 Series6 months
Classic 400 Series 6 months
Pro (all models)6 months
Blue Series6 months

The longest-lasting filters are in the Blueair premium series Protect and DustMagnet, which can last up to 12 months.

Keep in mind that sometimes you should replace the filter sooner, or rather, before the filter reset indicator lights up. Specific circumstances include:

  • Significantly reduced airflow may indicate an over-clogged filter, so I suggest cleaning the pre-filter or replacing the entire filter with a new one.
  • If the filter doesn’t appear dirty but produces an unusual smell, it might be time to replace it.
  • If you notice poor air purification quality, it may be time to replace the filter.
If you detect any smell from the Blueair air purifier filter, always wait for at least 24 hours before replacing it, as the odor can sometimes disappear.

If you’re unsure how to replace an air purifier’s filter properly, you can check the Blueair 411 filter replacement process, the Blueair 411 Auto filter replacement process, or the Blueair 211+ filter replacement process, which I have explained in great detail.

How To Reset The Blueair Air Purifier Red Light?

A red light on a Blueair air purifier typically represents the filter reset indicator and signals that it’s time to replace the filter. So, when you see the red light indicator on your Blueair air purifier, you should replace your old filter as soon as possible.

However, not all filter reset indicators on Blueair air purifiers light up in red. On some models, it lights up in orange; there is also a yellow color and a neutral one as well. Consequently, I have summarized all the different lights and created a table where you can see the filter reset indicator colors for different Blueair models.

ModelFilter Reset Indicator Color
HealthPro (10 and 40 series)Red
HealthPro (70 series)Neutral (filter icon)
DustMagnet (all models)Red
Classic (all models)Orange
Blue (all models)Red (indicates replacing the filter), Yellow (indicates there is a month until filter replacement)

You don’t need to worry if your Blueair shows a red light, as it usually means you need to replace the air purifier’s filter as soon as possible, and typically, nothing more.

How Long Should You Keep Your Blueair Running?

Air purifiers are long-lasting devices that don’t use too much power, can’t easily overheat, and are unlikely to burn out. This means that you can run an air purifier 24/7 without worrying it will break down.

The same applies to Blueair air purifiers. However, I wouldn’t suggest running an air purifier 24/7 without considering other possibilities.

For example, if the air purifier has features such as ECO mode or Auto Mode, I would recommend using those instead of a regular speed. Also, if an air purifier has a smart app, you can turn it off when you’re not at home and turn it back on when returning home.

Furthermore, the Blueair app, which I described previously, has an incredible feature. It tracks when you are 15 minutes away from your home and then turns the air purifier on so that clean and healthy air welcomes you when you arrive. It’s a great feature and innovation that I haven’t seen in other smart apps. Well done, Blueair!

Using an air purifier in auto mode instead of leaving it on a specific speed all the time will significantly reduce your electric bill costs.

Maximizing the Efficiency of Your Blueair Air Purifier

You should always consider the efficiency of an air purifier. Since many Blueair air purifiers are built differently, with varying principles for drawing air in and letting it out, you should be aware that improper placement can significantly reduce the air purifier’s performance/efficiency.

For example, Blueair Blue Pure series air purifiers have air inlets spread throughout the entire device, so you should avoid blocking them if you want your air purifier to be highly efficient. On the other hand, some models from the Classic series draw air in from the side, which you should also consider when placing an air purifier.

Recently, I researched this topic and wrote an article about placing your air purifier in a room, which is an excellent piece that I recommend every beginner or first-time user to read.

  1. Roger Simmons

I washed the pre-filter and changed the HEPA filter, and now the air quality light is red and won’t change back to blue. I called the support line, and the agent said to let it run and that it’d change back after a few hours. I let it run all afternoon, and still no blue light, plus the fan is on high.

I know the air isn’t dirty in the house.

What should I do to correct this? The unit is about 1 year old.

    Thanks

  2. Janet

I have tried this several times with no success. The lights will not turn back to white even after removing and replacing with new filters.

Bluair 411 red light is still on despite filter replacement and reset. Fan is going.

Try resetting the filter reset indicator again. First, turn on the air purifier, then press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds.

I have the blueair 411, and I’ve had it for about a year or so. I just replaced the filter and noticed today the lights are red, I just replaced the filter recently. How do I reset the red light, you didn’t explain that. There is no button to push. Thanks, I do love my blueair

    • Milan Antonic

You need to press and hold the power button for at least 5s (or until the red light disappears) to reset the filter reset indicator on the Blueair 411.
