Full Review
In this review, I have thoroughly tested another air purifier from Levoit’s Core series, the Levoit Core Mini. Despite being the smallest in the series, it has innovative and unusual features that make it interesting and worth considering.
This air purifier is designed for very small rooms, up to 72 sq. ft. (6.7 m²), and in a room of this size, it can clean the air 4.8 times in one hour.
The Levoit Core Mini is characterized by the addition of aroma pads, 3-stage filtration technology, very low power consumption, and easy maintenance. I would say that the Core Mini is best suited for small bedrooms, offices, or any small space within the recommended coverage.
With the addition of aroma pads, it does more than clean the air in your room; it also enhances the space with the scent of essential oils.
In the following paragraphs, I will present the results of all the tests we have taken on the Core Mini air purifier. I will also list its specifications and will touch on its build quality as well as everything that’s associated with this small device. So read on and find out if this is the air purifier for you!
How We Tested the Levoit Core Mini?
1. For the filter efficiency testing, we used the Temtop LKC-1000S laser particle meter, which measures PM2.5 (µg/m3), PM10 (µg/m3), Particles (per/L), and HCHO (mg/m3) in the air, and also calculates the AQI.
2. We placed the Levoit Core Mini in two separate performance tests, one in a 120 sq. ft. (11 m²) room and the other in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room. Then, we recorded the initial air quality values using the Temtop laser particle meter and let the Levoit Core Mini run at maximum speed.
3. After 60 minutes, we measured the new values using the Temtop laser particle meter and saved the data.
4. Next, we placed the Levoit Core Mini in a glass box, which we then filled with smoke. Then, we measured how much time was needed for the air purifier to remove all the smoke from the box.
5. Using a special noise measurement tool, we tested the air purifier’s noise level at all speeds. We measured the noise level on the dBA scale.
6. Finally, we measured the power usage at all speeds using an energy meter, after which we calculated how much it would cost to use the device at a particular fan speed for one month. For reference, we used an energy price of $0.12 per kWh.
Performance – Particle Removal Tests
Performance – Particle Removal Tests:
8.5 - Average Score (67 products)
9.8 - Best Score (2 products)
2.5 - Worst Score (2 products)
We use the Temtop LKC-1000S laser particle meter to test the particle removal efficiency of every air purifier. It measures PM2.5 (µg/m3), PM10 (µg/m3), Particles (per/L), and HCHO (mg/m3) in the air, and also calculates the AQI.

When it comes to performance tests, I have to say that we pushed the Levoit Core Mini beyond its limits, especially by testing it in rooms much larger than the recommended size.
The lack of a True HEPA filter was evident, and the small filter size was noticeable, particularly in its slightly weaker performance at neutralizing odors during our tests.
Testing in a 120 sq. ft. (11 m²) Room
In the first test, performed in a room of 120 sq. ft. (11 m²), which is nearly twice the recommended size, this air purifier delivered solid results, improving air quality by an impressive 91% after 60 minutes of operation at maximum speed.
# | Starting Baseline | After 60 min |
---|---|---|
PM 2.5 | 95.3 µg/m³ | 8.4 µg/m³ |
PM 10 | 133.4 µg/m³ | 11.8 µg/m³ |
Particles | 138200 per/L | 12226 per/L |
AQI | 125 | 11 |
This means the Core Mini reduced PM2.5 particulate matter from 95.3 to 8.4 µg/m³—above average compared to other small air purifiers tested.
In the same test, the Levoit LV-H132 improved air quality by 88%, but it underperformed compared to the Core Mini despite being a slightly larger and more powerful device.
Particle Removal Test Room - Comparison
Comparison between the Levoit Core Mini and its competitors in particle removal tests in a 120 sq. ft. (11 m²) room.
Please refer to the chart above for a comparison with similar models.
Considering that the Core Mini lacks a True HEPA filter and has a relatively small filter, I’m very satisfied with these results.
Testing in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) Room
In the second test, performed in a 194 sq. ft. (18 m²) room, which is significantly larger than the recommended size, I have to say the Levoit Core Mini didn’t disappoint.
In 60 minutes of operation at maximum speed, the Core Mini improved air quality by 89%—a very good result, and much better than I expected given its power.
# | Starting Baseline | After 60 min |
---|---|---|
PM 2.5 | 96.1 µg/m³ | 9.9 µg/m³ |
PM 10 | 134.5 µg/m³ | 13.8 µg/m³ |
Particles | 139374 per/L | 14389 per/L |
AQI | 126 | 14 |
Although it can’t compete with a model like the Levoit Core 300, the Core Mini is still a solid air purifier for smaller rooms.
Performance – Smoke Removal Test
It’s hard to expect a small air purifier like the Levoit Core Mini to excel in our smoke test, primarily due to its low CADR and a carbon filter that isn’t designed to handle heavy smoke effectively.
However, the Levoit Core Mini still managed to clear all the smoke from the glass box in 74 seconds, which is a good result, especially considering that only a few better-performing devices are available in the same price range.
Smoke Box Test - Comparison
In this chart, you can see how quickly the Levoit Core Mini removes smoke from a glass box compared to its competitors.
When comparing this result to similar air purifiers, we can say that the Core Mini ranks around the middle. For instance, the Levoit LV-H132 cleared the smoke in 50 seconds, the Core 200S took about 32 seconds, while the TaoTronics TT-AP001 required a lengthy 112 seconds.
As you can see, there are many slower and less efficient devices than the Core Mini, so in comparison to its competition, this is a decent result.
Noise Levels Test
Noise – Sound Level Tests:
9.3 - Average Score (67 products)
10 - Best Score (1 products)
8.2 - Worst Score (1 products)
We use a special noise measurement tool to test the noise level of the air purifier at all speeds. We measure the noise level on the dBA scale.
You can read more about our testing methodology here.
It’s quite clear that a small air purifier like the Levoit Core Mini won’t produce loud noise, as it lacks a large, powerful motor capable of generating sound levels that would disturb the average user.
The Levoit Core Mini has three fan speeds. At the lowest speed, it produces just 41.8 dBA, and at the highest, only 53.6 dBA.
Fan Speed | Levoit Core Mini (dBA) |
---|---|
Speed 1 (Low) | 41.8 dBA |
Speed 2 (Medium) | 46.5 dBA |
Speed 3 (High) | 53.6 dBA |
This makes it clear that the Core Mini isn’t loud, even at maximum speed, especially compared to competing devices that produce sound levels well over 60 dBA.
Noise Levels Test - Comparison
This chart compares the noise levels at the minimum and maximum speeds of the Levoit Core Mini air purifier with those of its competitors.
For instance, the Blueair Mini Max generates 60.3 dBA at its highest speed, while the RENPHO RP-AP088W reaches 65.4 dBA.
Given the very low noise levels, I would recommend the Core Mini for use in bedrooms, offices, children’s rooms, or any small space where quiet operation is needed.
With this model, Levoit has demonstrated that an air purifier can be both energy-efficient and a low-power consumer. The Levoit Core Mini uses a motor that consumes only 7W, making it one of the most energy-efficient air purifiers on the market.
It consumes even less power than the popular Blueair 411 Auto, which uses a 10W motor.
Fan Speed | Levoit Core Mini (W + $/month) |
---|---|
Standby | 0W ($0) |
Speed 1 (Low) | 1W ($0.09) |
Speed 2 (Medium) | 2.8W ($0.25) |
Speed 3 (High) | 7.2W ($0.63) |
For example, if you were to run the Levoit Core Mini at maximum speed, 24 hours a day, for an entire month, your electricity bill would increase by only about $0.63. Compared to similar air purifiers, the Levoit Core Mini ranks among the top three in energy efficiency.
One air purifier with a slightly more optimized motor is the IKEA UPPÅTVIND, which would cost about $0.59 under the same conditions.
Monthly Power Cost – Comparison
Comparison of the monthly power cost at maximum speed between the Levoit Core Mini and some of its competitors.
In addition to the cost of electricity, there’s also the cost of replacement filters, which need to be changed up to three times a year.
When we consider all the costs, the Levoit Core Mini isn’t expensive to maintain annually. However, a more durable filter would have resulted in an even higher score in our test.
Filtration Technology
This small air purifier uses a cylindrical filter that takes up half of the unit and consists of 3-stage filtration technology. In fact, we have seen this type of filter before in other Levoit air purifiers, and there is not much difference, except for one important one, which is that the Levoit Core Mini does not have a True HEPA filter.
Although this air purifier does not use the best of Levoit, I have to admit that it performed very well in the performance tests, much better than expected, and above all, much better than some other similar air purifiers from Levoit.
Levoit Core Mini Replacement Filter
Always buy genuine filters for the best performance. As soon as the filter reset indicator is on, you are ready to change filters. Do it as quickly as possible.
Check Filter Price On AmazonPre-filter
The pre-filter is the first stage of filtration and is a very important stage, especially as this filter captures large particles such as dust, fibers, lint, pet hair, and pet dander. In this way, this filter preserves the HEPA filter and prolongs its life.
To keep the filtration quality at the highest level and to preserve the HEPA filter for as long as possible, I recommend cleaning the pre-filter with a dry cloth or vacuum cleaner 1-2 times a month.
Personal HEPA filter – Not a True HEPA
In my opinion, the biggest weakness of this model is that it does not have a True HEPA filter, which makes this air purifier not as powerful as some other Levoit air purifiers. This air purifier uses a personal HEPA filter that removes at least 97% of airborne particles up to 0.3 microns in size, while a true HEPA filter removes 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns in size.
However, the Core Mini has performed well in performance tests, and this air purifier effectively traps airborne particles such as fine dust, smoke particles, and allergens such as pollen and pet hair, among others.
Activated Carbon Filter
The final stage of filtration is the activated carbon filter, which neutralizes odors. This filter physically adsorbs smoke, odors, and fumes.
How to Replace the Levoit Core Mini Filter?
The Levoit Core Mini uses a filter that is not washable, which means that it needs to be changed from time to time. Given that it is a small filter, I was very surprised to find that it lasts, on average, 4-6 months.
Although the filter should not be washed, I recommend regular maintenance and cleaning of the pre-filter at least twice a month. This can be done with a dry cloth or with a vacuum cleaner.
Total time: 5 minutes.
Step 1 – Unplug the Device
Unplug the device from the mains and immediately separate the upper and lower parts of the device.
Step 2 – Pull Out Old Filter
Then, remove the old filter from the device.
Step 3 – Vacuum Inside
It would be a good idea to remove any remaining dust that may have accumulated in the machine. This can be done with a dry cloth or even with a vacuum cleaner.
Step 4 – Insert a New Filter
Then, unpack the new filter and insert it into the device.
Step 5 – Assemble the Device
Screw the upper part of the device to the lower part, and restore everything to its original state.
Step 6 – Reset the Filter Reset Indicator
Finally, reset the filter reset indicator by holding your finger on the power button for 3 seconds. To reset the filter reset indicator, the device must be switched off!
Setup and Installation
The Levoit Core Mini is a very small air purifier that comes in an equally small package. However, due to the specific way it is packaged, it requires some preparation before the first start-up.
To start, remove the device packaging from the box. Next, separate the top and bottom of the device and remove the filter and the supplied power supply from the bottom of the device. Unpack the filter, insert it back into the device, and screw the top part to the bottom part. Then remove the power supply and connect it to the device. Place the Core Mini in the desired location, move it at least 15 centimeters away from the wall or other objects, plug it in, and switch it on safely.
Design
I don’t think much needs to be said about the design of this air purifier. The Levoit Core Mini is basically a small air purifier with a smooth, cool design. It has a characteristic cylindrical shape and consists of two parts that are separated from each other. The lower part houses the 3-in-1 filter, while the upper part houses the motor, the control knob, the aroma pad, and the slot for the power supply.
As far as build quality is concerned, I have to say that this is a device of quite decent quality, just enough for this type of device. The controls are placed in an accessible location, it is easy to carry around, and the simple/minimalist design makes me confident that it fits in with almost any environment.
I also like the fact that the Aroma Pad is very well hidden and does not interfere with daily use. It is located near the top of the device in a special “drawer” that can be pulled out.
Single Button for Full Control
The control panel, consisting of indicators and one control button, is located on the top of the device. To begin with, I would like to point out that the control knob is based on touch technology. It is very precise and very well-placed. I would also point out that the indicators are clearly visible and legible. Above the control knob are the indicators for the current fan speed and the filter reset indicator (which only lights up when it is time to change the filter).
Please note that the indicator lights automatically switch off after 60 seconds of no use. This is very good if you intend to use the device in a bedroom or similar room where the indicator light might disturb you.
Airflow
As I mentioned earlier, the Levoit Core Mini is cylindrical in shape and consists of two parts. The lower part consists of small round holes arranged on all sides. Through lower holes, the air purifier sucks in air, which is then filtered and exits through the openings on the top of the device.
Size and Dimensions
The air purifier weighs 2.2 lb (1 kg). The dimensions of the device are: 6.5 x 6.5 x 10.4 inches (16.4 x 16.4 x 26.4 cm). The Levoit Core Mini is a very small air purifier, and, in short, the lack of slots or handles for carrying is not a problem as the device is very light. I am sure you will have no problems carrying it from one location to another.
What’s in the Box?
When you buy the device, you will receive a Core Mini Air Purifier, 3-Stage Filter (pre-installed), Aroma Pad (pre-installed), AC adapter, and user manual.
The Levoit Core Mini is packaged in a somewhat specific way, so I suggest you read the instructions I have written for installing and setting up the device for first use.
Features Overview
The Levoit Core Mini is a small and minimalistic air purifier that doesn’t have many advanced features. In fact, this device has a few essential options, such as a filter reset indicator, and that’s it. However, it is the Aroma Box feature that takes it to a slightly higher level and makes it unique and exceptional on the market.
Filter Reset Indicator
The filter reset indicator is a very useful option that lets you know when it’s time to change the filter. This indicator is located on the control panel but is not always visible, only when it is time to change the filter. You will know and notice this very easily as the indicator will glow bright red.
Aroma Pad – An Innovative Feature
I have to admit that I first saw this option on the Levoit LV-H128, and I was simply blown away by it, mainly because I’m a fan of essential oils.
The Aroma Box is basically the part on the top of the gadget where the Aroma Pad is placed, into which you can drip essential oil, preferably 5-7 drops. After you switch on the air purifier, the airflow is such that the air will pass through the Aroma Box and thus disperse the scent of the essential oil throughout the room.
Please note that the Aroma Pad is consumable and must be replaced after a certain period of use.
Warranty
Levoit, like all other models, gives a 2-year warranty on this model. To confirm the warranty, I recommend that you register the air purifier on the Levoit website immediately after purchase, wherever you buy it.
Room Coverage and CADR
The Levoit Core Mini is, as I have mentioned countless times, a very small air purifier, so it covers rooms of only 72 sq. ft. (6.7 m²). In such a large room, the device will clean the air 4.8x in one hour, and I personally recommend using the device in rooms of these dimensions.
However, the Core Mini scored very well in the performance tests I conducted in larger rooms, which means that it could be very useful in slightly larger rooms. For example, this air purifier will clean the air twice an hour in a room up to 178 sq. ft.
If you’re still looking for an air purifier that’s a little bigger and more powerful, there are always other models in the Core series, such as the Levoit Core 200S. In short, remember that the Core Mini is designed for small rooms, and if you need a device for larger rooms, look for another, more powerful model.
FAQ on Levoit Core Mini
Does Levoit Core Mini produce ozone?
No. The Levoit Core Mini does not have an ionizer or any other type of filtration that can produce ozone, which means that this device is 100% ozone-free and completely safe to use. On top of all this, this air purifier is CARB-certified.
What is the warranty on the Levoit Core Mini?
The Levoit Core Mini, like almost all Levoit air purifiers, comes with a 2-year warranty.
How often do I need to change the Core Mini filters?
This air purifier requires filter changes between 4 and 6 months, which is approximately up to 3 times a year. Fortunately, this device has a filter reset indicator that lets you know when it’s time to change the filter.
It’s good that you mention that this doesn’t come with a True HEPA filter from the OEM. Levoit seems to avoid mentioning this in most of their marketing materials. I bought the unit knowing that it comes from a solid manufacturer (I like Germ Guardian, Levoit, and Winix). After discovering that it didn’t have a True HEPA filter I considered cancelling my order but was able to find replacements that are H13 rated. Apparently they will trigger the replacement light a bit sooner but I’m ok with that since I know about it in advance. I’ll just replace them at a set interval.
Even though it doesn’t come with a True HEPA filter, it still performs solidly in my tests. HEPA H13 filters from third-party brands don’t seem to be as reliable as the original filter from the manufacturer despite being marketed as a higher grade.
I would think twice before buying any third-party filter, and I would only purchase it if it’s from reputable companies such as Filterete or similar.
Is Levoit Core mini safe to use around newborns?
Yes, it is. It’s CARB certified, doesn’t produce ozone, and is 100% safe to use. However, you should pay attention when choosing essential oils if you plan to use them (it’s optional).
It seems that when I use an air purifier it somehow interferes with the air coming from my AC vents – like maybe as the cold air comes out of the vents and falls down, the air purifier pushes the cold air back up and then it gets pulled out of the room by the return. I just never seem to feel the cold air. I am wondering if something like the Levoit Core Mini would be good for that reason – it might let the cold air come down enough to actually be pulled into the air purifier and get cleaned. Any thoughts?
Does this air filter help with mold particles?
Yes, it does help in removing airborne mold particles.
You write that the Core Mini is only for rooms up to 71sf, but the Levoit site says it covers up to 178 sf, or 17 m2. Are you writing your numbers because you’ve tested the small square footage up against the larger one that Levoit provides? I was looking to buy this for a bedroom at 150sf, but I’m concerned now that it won’t be adequate for the job.
Thank you.
The Levoit Core Mini cleans a 178 sq. ft. room 2 times in one hour and a 71 sq. ft. room about 4.8 times in one hour. As the industry standard is 4.8 ACH (air changes per hour), my suggestion is in harmony with it.
If you look closely at Levoit’s presentation, you will see that they explained how many times the Core Mini cleans different size rooms.
I would rather suggest going with the Levoit Core 200S.
After 12 months you’ve already spent more on filters than the cost of the whole unit.
I wish they could last 12 months as standard, this is the reason I went for the Philips (as recommended on this site).
