Full Review
Medify is a very well-positioned company in the air purifier market. They currently offer more than 10 air purifiers that are well accepted by users and are one of the best-selling brands on the market.
This review will present a detailed overview of the Medify Air MA-25 air purifier. It is a small air purifier that I would recommend for rooms up to 210 m2. ft. In a room of this size, the Medify MA-25 will purify the air 4.8 times, which is the standard in the air purifier industry. However, in the performance tests, you will see that the Medify MA-25 is a perfect choice that performs great even in a slightly larger room.
This small air purifier reminds me very much of the Aroeve MK01, which I have tested and whose review I definitely recommend you look at. These two models share a double filter mounted on the sides.
The Medify MA-25, as I mentioned earlier, uses a dual filter, which is a three-stage filter containing a pre-filter, a True HEPA filter, and an activated carbon filter. I would like to point out that I like this three-stage filtration very much. It is a big plus that Medify uses a True HEPA filter and uses a pellet-based carbon filter.
Find out why the Medify MA-25 is one of Medify’s best-selling and most popular air purifiers, how effective it is, and how loud it is by reading this air purifier review.
Installation and Setup
The Medify MA-25 is a simple air purifier that does not require advanced preparation before starting. However, be sure to remove the plastic protection from both filters before starting it for the first time. This can cause the motor to overheat and damage the unit.
After that, all you have to do is connect the power cable to the Medify, place it in the desired location, take care not to block the airflow, plug it in, and switch it on.
Design
The Medify MA-25 is a sleek, rectangular-shaped, compact air purifier. It is very similar to the other air purifiers in the Medify range. This model is available in black, silver, and white color. The model I am testing and presenting in this review is white, except for the top panel, which is black.
I would also like to point out that I am surprised because the top panel is made of tempered glass, which is not very common in air purifiers. Note that tempered glass is scratch-resistant, which is not the case with some other air purifiers that use plastic for this purpose.
The build quality of the Medify MA-25 is of an excellent standard. The plastic quality is also excellent. I like the fact that the designers have thought about almost every detail. There are carrying handles on the side to make moving this already small device even easier from room to room.
The Medify MA-25 blends in perfectly in almost any environment, especially when you add to the exquisite design the possibility of choosing three different colors. It fits very well on an office desk, a bedside table, or even on the floor.
Control Panel
As I mentioned before, the control panel is located at the top of the device. It consists of touch buttons and indicators. The buttons are sufficiently sensitive, react quickly to pressure, and are very well-arranged.
The buttons located on the Medify MA-25 are the child lock, timer, power, speed, and dimmer controls. Each button is an indicator of its own, so it lights up when active.
There are additional indicators above some of the buttons. You can see indicators above the timer button to show the current timer setting. Or above the fan speed button, you can see indicators showing the current fan speed.
In fact, I really like the position of the control panel. I like the fact that the buttons are horizontally arranged and large enough, and quite pressure-sensitive.
Airflow
When it comes to airflow, this is the first point on this device that I object to, and it concerns how the Medify MA-25 expels air from the device.
This air purifier draws air through the openings on the sides, which is then filtered and exits through the slots on the front. What I do not like here, and I do not think it is the best solution, is that the air comes out in the front. A much better solution, which would achieve greater efficiency, is for the air to come out at the top or when the situation is such that it at least comes out from the back.
In addition, it is much more difficult for me to place the device on an office desk or in a location because it is not very practical to have the device blowing towards me all the time.
Size and Dimensions
The air purifier weighs 7.3 lb. The dimensions of the device are 13.5 x 8 x 8 inches. As I described at the beginning of the review, the MA-25 is lightweight, compact, and easy to carry.
What’s in the box?
You will receive a Medify MA-25 air purifier, two 3-in-1 filters, and a user manual when you purchase the device.
The Medify MA-25 requires some preparation before the first run. I recommend everyone read the installation tips for this device at the beginning of the review if you haven’t already.
Features Overview
The Medify MA-25 is not a smart air purifier. Still, it has all the necessary features to meet the basic needs. Although extras such as a smart sensor, auto mode, and the like would be a big plus for this model, I feel that they are unnecessary.
You will be able to use this air purifier with the features it offers easily every day.
Timer
A timer is a handy option that sets the time when you want the air purifier to switch itself off. The timer of the Medify MA-25 can be set to 1h, 2h, 4h, or 8h. This handy option allows you to program the operation of this petite air purifier to a certain extent.
Child Lock
A child lock is also a handy option if you want to lock the touch buttons and prevent accidental switching off or changing the settings.
The child lock is activated by pressing the button for 3 seconds. The air purifier will not respond to any button press after that. To deactivate a child lock, you only need to hold your finger on this button for 3 seconds once more.
Dimmer
The Dimmer option can be handy because the Medify MA-25 does not have a built-in sleep mode. By combining it with Speed 1, you can feel that the device is working as it is in sleep mode.
Medify has 4 different brightness levels for all buttons. The brightness changes every time you press the dimmer button.
Filter Reset Indicator
A filter reset indicator is a handy option that allows you to relax rather than manually keep track of when it’s time to change the filter. The Filter Reset Indicator is an icon with two filters drawn on it. It is not visible until it is time to change the filter.
When it is time to change the filter, this icon will light up red. The icon is located at the top of the control panel, just above the dimmer button.
After changing the filter, it is necessary to reset this indicator. This is done by holding your finger on the dimmer button for 3 seconds.
Room Coverage
The Medify MA-25 is a small air purifier best used in rooms up to 210 sq. ft. This air purifier will clean the air 4.8 times in a room of this size, which is the ACH rating and is also the market standard for determining coverage.
The MA-25 has a CADR of 135 CFM (230m³/h), which indicates how powerful the Medify MA-25 is. In addition, the Medify MA-25 will clean the air in a 1000 sq. ft. room every 60 minutes, in a 500 sq. ft. room every 30 minutes, while in a 250 sq. ft. room, it will clean the air every 15 minutes.
Condition | Required minimum Air Changes per Hour (ACH) | Suitable room size | The time it takes to clean the air in the room |
---|---|---|---|
Smoke or VOCs | 8 | 126 sq. ft. | 8 min |
AHAM standard (recommended for many conditions) | 4.8 | 210 sq. ft. | 13 min |
Normal conditions | 2 | 500 sq. ft. | 30 min |
The Medify MA-25 is a small air purifier that perfectly fits a bedroom, small living room, office, or kitchen. You can use this air purifier in rooms slightly larger than the recommended dimensions, mainly because the MA-25 performed very well in performance tests in rooms larger than the recommended ones.
Filtration Technology
When it comes to filtration, I would like to say that I really like the fact that the Medify MA-25 uses a double filter. I think this is one of the reasons why this air purifier scored so well on the tests.
These two filters contain a 3-stage filtration, comprising a pre-filter, a True HEPA filter, and an activated carbon filter. The filters in this air purifier are of exceptionally high quality; the device does not use an ionizer or any similar additional form of filtration, making the Medify MA-25 an ozone-free air purifier.
The filters on the Medify MA-25 are not washable. They should be changed regularly, as soon as the filter reset indicator lights up.
Pre-filter
The pre-filter is the first stage of filtration. Its purpose is to trap all large particles such as pet hair, fibers, and pet dander, thus extending the life of True HEPA filters. This filter is essentially a nylon mesh attached to the True HEPA filter.
I would advise everyone to maintain the pre-filter regularly and vacuum it at least twice a month. This ensures that you always maintain a high efficiency level, and the filter will last longer.
True HEPA Filter
The True HEPA filter is the basic level of filtration and, indeed, the most deserving filter for the excellent performance that this appliance has shown in tests.
A True HEPA filter captures 99.97% of harmful particles, including allergens, odors, VOCs, smoke, pollen, pet dander, dust, smog, pollutants, and others down to 0.3 microns in size.
Activated Carbon Filter
The activated carbon filter is the last stage of filtration. Its purpose is to adsorb pet dander, cooking odors, and VOCs in the household.
I really like the fact that Medify has put a pellet-based carbon filter in this device, as this type of carbon filter is generally known to be much more reliable in neutralizing odors than ordinary carbon-coated fiber filters.
How to Replace Medify MA-25 Filters?
As I mentioned earlier, the Medify MA-25 does not use washable filters, which means that the filters need to be changed from time to time. For this device, the filters last on average between 3-4 months or approximately 2500 hours of continuous operation.
I recommend everyone to always use original Medify filters and never buy third-party filters. There are several reasons, but I would like to point out that by purchasing original Medify filters, you are entitled to a lifetime guarantee through their website.
The second reason is that Medify filters are tested, effective, and reliable, which may not be the case with filters from other companies.
The process of replacing the filter on this device is straightforward and is done in a few steps, which you can follow below.
Total time: 5 minutes.
Step 1
To begin, unplug the device from the mains and immediately open the covers on the sides.
Step 2
The next step is to remove the old filters from the device.
Step 3
It would be good to use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum up any dust accumulated inside the lid or inside the device.
Step 4
Then unpack the new filters, insert them into the appliance and close the lids.
Step 5
The last step is to reset the filter reset indicator by holding your finger on the dimmer button for 3 seconds.
Noise Test
The Medify MA-25 uses only 3 fan speeds. I always prefer air purifiers with more speeds or at least a sleep mode, which is not the case with this model. However, the Medify MA-25 is so quiet at speed 1 that I can safely say it is quieter than some competing devices in sleep mode.
At speed 1, the Medify produces sound at only 41.8 dBA. At the second speed, the volume is also very low, and believe me, you will have no problems if you stay in the same room with the device while running at that fan speed.
However, at maximum speed, the volume is slightly louder. At this speed, Medify emits a sound of 64.0 dBA, and I believe that some users will find it challenging to stay in the same room with the device while working at this speed.
Speed | Value (dBA) |
---|---|
Speed 1 | 41.8 dBA |
Speed 2 | 50.3 dBA |
Speed 3 | 64.0 dBA |
You should bear in mind that Medify MA-25 is most efficient at maximum speed, but also bear in mind that you will not need to use the air purifier as often at maximum speed. In fact, the Medify isn’t that loud air purifier, and I believe that every user will find the optimum speed and the way to use the Medify in the way that suits them best.
Performance Tests
The Medify MA-25 is a small air purifier that I recommend for use in rooms up to 210 sq. ft. Interestingly, this model showed excellent performance in slightly larger rooms, so I tested it in a 320 sq. ft. room.
In addition, I would like to point out that the Medify MA-25 showed solid results in real-life cooking neutralization and pet odor neutralization tests. As such, I believe it will serve almost any household very well. As a downside, I would mention the lack of a sleep mode, so every time I use it in the bedroom, I have to manually switch it to speed 1 and set the dimmer, which is not a problem, but it would be much easier to do it all with the click of the sleep button.
Overall, I am happy with this air purifier’s performance and would absolutely recommend it for almost any situation.
194 sq. ft. Room Test
In the first test, in a 194 sq. ft. room, I set up the Medify MA-25 and left it running for 60 minutes at maximum speed. After this time, I measured the air quality. I found that Medify had improved the air quality by an amazing 94%.
# | Starting Baseline | After 60min |
---|---|---|
PM 2.5 | 105.5 | 5.9 |
PM 10 | 147.8 | 8.2 |
Particles | 153111 | 8555 |
AQI | 138 | 8 |
Although the room is slightly smaller than the recommended dimensions, I have to say that this is a remarkable result and indicates how serious and competitive the MA-25 air purifier is on the market.
320 sq. ft. Room Test
In another test in a room of 320 sq. ft., which is slightly larger than the recommended dimensions, the Medify MA-25 also performed very well, improving air quality by approximately 91% in 60 minutes of operation at maximum speed.
# | Starting Baseline | After 60min |
---|---|---|
PM 2.5 | 106.7 | 9.3 |
PM 10 | 149.4 | 13 |
Particles | 154775 | 13515 |
AQI | 139 | 12 |
This is an excellent result and much better than expected. At the same time, it confirms that the Medify MA-25 can easily be used in rooms of slightly larger dimensions. Even more interesting about this test is that even after 60 minutes, the Medify continued to improve air quality.
Operating Costs
The Medify MA-25 is a small air purifier that uses a motor power of only 28W. A motor of this power, which gives an airflow of 230m³/h, is just proof that Medify has excellent engineers who know how to optimize the motor correctly.
The Medify needs very little energy. At maximum speed, it only uses 26.3W. Suppose you leave the air purifier running at the maximum speed, 24 hours a day for a month. In that case, your electricity bill will only increase by about $2.3. You’ll agree that this is a minimal cost, especially considering this air purifier’s benefits. In addition, the Medify MA-25 is Energy Star certified.
Speed | Power Usage (W) |
---|---|
Standby | 0.1W |
Speed 1 | 1.6W |
Speed 2 | 7.3W |
Speed 3 | 26.3W |
However, in addition to the cost of electricity, replacement filters are a little more expensive than I expected, especially considering that the filters have to be changed 3 times a year. However, this should not be a problem, especially since you are entitled to a lifetime warranty by signing up for replacement filters on the Medify website.
The Medify MA-25 needs very little energy, but it also requires frequent filter changes that are unfavorable for annual maintenance. This means that the MA-25 could be more affordable and that the main culprit is the slightly higher price of replacement filters.
