Levoit Core 400S Vs LV-H134 – Size Or Efficiency? (2023)

It is almost impossible to compare all the Levoit air purifiers with each other, as they release a new model every few months. This time, I will compare two devices, the Levoit Core 400S, a medium-sized air purifier, and the Levoit LV-H134, a large air purifier.

These two are top-in-the-class, highly reliable, and extremely efficient air purifiers. They both come with many advanced options such as an air quality sensor, air quality indicator, auto mode, and similar. The Core 400S covers rooms up to 403 sq. ft., while the LV-H134 covers slightly larger rooms, up to 492 sq. ft. 

What I especially like about these two is the 3-in-1 filtration technology, consisting of a pre-filter, True HEPA filter, and activated carbon filter. Because of the high-quality filtration technology, specifically, thanks to the True HEPA filter, these air purifiers made great results in performance tests. Still, the question is, which one is a better buying option? Features Overview

It is a real challenge sometimes to confront any two Levoit devices, especially since each new version arrives with advanced features by default.

Features such as Sleep Mode, Filter Reset Indicator, or Air quality indicator make you take it for granted while speaking of the Levoit Company. Let’s see all the shades between these two devices before you make a decision. 

Air Quality Sensor and Indicator

Having an air quality sensor and an indicator is, for sure, one of the essential features any air purifier should have. How else would you know if or how much the air in your room is contaminated? As for these two air purifiers, the comparison is quite interesting regarding this feature. 

I will start with the Levoit LV-H134, which has the air quality sensor located on the rear. This laser counter detects the real-time PM2.5 particles while working in sync with the air quality indicator. The sensor will display the number of particles straight on display, but the indicator will switch colors depending on the present pollution. Therefore, it can vary from blue, green, or orange to red. 

The Levoit Core 400S also has an air quality sensor on the back side, and I am talking about the AirSight plus laser dust sensor. It can also detect the real-time amount of PM2.5 particles, which you can monitor via the VeSync app. The sensor works in collaboration with the air quality indicator, by expressing the air quality through the color of the indicator. In order for this sensor to work, you must keep the air purifier plugged in. That way, you can keep track of the air quality through the app, even if the device switches to standby mode. 

Auto Mode

This enables your air purifier to switch modes and fan speeds, adjusted to the level of room pollution. 

Both air purifiers have this option, but unlike Levoit LV-H134, which has a simple version of this feature, Levoit Core 400S has two other versions along with the simple one. There is a silent auto mode that will never make the air purifier run in Turbo mode, and there is the efficient auto mode which lets you set the room size. All these modes are available only through the VeSync app. 

Sleep Mode

Having a Sleep mode is most definitely a great option, but having it as a stand-alone function is preferable. This means that the functioning of your air purifier will not be interrupted by any other feature. Both today’s competitors have this feature, and it works in a way that turns off the LED indicators and sets the speed level to the lowest. That way, you can freely use it in your bedroom through the night but in your workspace too, more so if you need deep concentration. 

Filter Reset Indicator

As for the Filter Reset Indicator, having it is a must. With this option, you are free from the need for constant monitoring of how used-up the filter of your air purifier is. Both LV-H134 and Core 400S have this feature, located next to the control table. The only difference, if I may call it that way, is that Levoit Core 400S can monitor this feature through the Smart app. 

Smart App (VeSync)

Between these two Levoit air purifiers, only Core 400S can connect to the VeSync app. You can install the app regardless if you have an Android or iOS cell phone. Like many other gadget apps, it provides a whole new set of additional options for Core 400S. 

Timer

One of those common features is the Timer, which allows you to set the time range for an air purifier. You can set it running between 1-12h. Once the time runs out, the Timer will let you know, and the appliance will turn OFF. An extra detail to the Core 400S is that you can control all the Timer settings across the VeSync app.

As for the Levoit LV-H134, everything is the same except the App, because that type of connectivity is not available in this case. 

Lock Screen

Only Levoit Core 400S comes with this feature, and it is quite handy I must admit. Even more so if you have a child or a curious pet that likes to press buttons for no reason. All you have to do is to hold the button for 3 seconds, and the device is locked. The same goes for the unlock procedure. The great thing is that you can still control the device via the VeSync App, even when it’s locked. 

Screen Off

Opposed to the Lock screen option, Levoit also has a Screen Off option. This feature lets you adapt the device to a current situation. For example, by turning this option ON, you can dim all the lights to make your device practically invisible during the nighttime. But let me tell you a secret. You can obtain the same result by switching the device to Sleep Mode. 

Display Off

The Levoit LV-H134 and Levoit Core 400S have this feature, which is available directly on the control panel. This is quite a handy option, allowing you to turn OFF all the indicators that this device owns. So, if you want your air purifier to be invisible during the nighttime and Casper-like-invisible, during the day, you can use this option. 

Airflow

Being cylindrical as it is, Levoit Core 400S also has the same shaped filter within. Air inlets are located all around the device’s bottom part. Once the air is filtered, it gets released through the upperside grilles. Even though Levoit LV-H134 does not have sharp edges, we cannot say it is entirely cylindrical. However, the airflow is the same as that of the opponent, since the air inlets and grilles are positioned on identical parts of devices. 

Warranty

Since both air purifiers are products of the same company, it is to be expected that they share the same warranty option. Levoit gives a 2-year warranty for all of its products, as long as you register on its website right after the purchase. Trust me, even though this sounds like a condition sine qua non, Levoit gives so much more in return. 

Filtration Technology

If you were expecting some mind-blowing filters in any of these air purifiers, you might end up disappointed. Don’t be. These two devices have a perfect 3-in-1 combo that never fails. Of course, I am talking about the Pre-filter, True HEPA filter, and an Activated carbon filter.

Pre-filter in both Levoit Core 400S and Levoit LV-H134 is kind of the first line of defense. It prevents all the large particles like dust, pet hair, fiber, etc., from penetrating, hence, protecting the True HEPA filter. 

The True HEPA filter is the second filter in line, designed to capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles, such as smoke, allergens, and fine dust. By catching PM2.5 particles it protects you from all the potential yet invisible threats to your respiratory system. 

The last in line is the Activated Carbon filter, pellet based, that keeps your room free from unpleasant odors, smoke, and fumes. Levoit Core 400S even has a specially designed ARC formula that keeps away cooking and pet odors. 

One thing you need to keep in mind is that none of these filters is washable. So, if you want them to last long, you must keep that in mind and wipe or vacuum them every once in a while. 

How to Replace Filters on Both of These Devices?

Washing filters in either Levoit LV-H134 or Levoit Core 400S is a big NO. Therefore, if you keep them clean, they can last pretty long. However, there will come a time when replacing the filters will be on your To-do list. 

As I said earlier, you will have a little helper on your way with the Filter Reset Indicator. All you have to do is to pay attention to the little light on the control panel. 

Levoit LV-H134 filters will last long, approximately 6-8 months, but Levoit 400S can beat that with a once-a-year replacement rate. 

Nevertheless, replacing any of the mentioned filters shouldn’t take much of your time and effort, so don’t be lazy. You know it’s worth it. 

Noise Tests

Being part of the Levoit family, both air purifiers have the most things in common. That stands for the operating modes: the Sleep, Low, Medium, and High modes plus the Turbo mode that only Core 400S has. 

As expected, the Sleep mode turned out to be the most silent mode of all. Since in both air purifiers this mode stands alone, I was able to capture the real-time results and although both were silent, LV-H134 turned out to be quieter. The higher the operating mode, the greater the noise, especially at the LV-H134 air purifier. 

While Levoit Core 400S turned out to be the loudest while in Turbo mode, it still produced far less noise than Levoit LV-H134 in High mode. Though I am aware that the maximum speed level generates better airflow, I can’t help but notice that with so much noise produced I couldn’t be in the same room with this air purifier. At least, not for a long time.

Performance Tests

Before I get to the performance test results, I must point out that both Levoit Core 400S and Levoit LV-H134 are designed for large rooms.

Core 400S is designed to cover up to 403 sq. ft, but LV-H134 can even more, up to 492 sq. ft. This is a big deal, so I decided to make separate tests, by putting both devices on maximum speed for 60 minutes. Here is what I found out. 

320 sq. ft. Room Tests

I only decided to test Levoit Core 400S in this room size since it is close to in-room coverage. The final result turned out to be 96% improved air quality, which is pretty awesome. 

560 sq. ft. Room Tests

This test was quite a challenging one. Not so much for the LV-H134, which gave 94% cleaner air, but also for the Core 400S, which managed to improve the air by 91%. I was both surprised and satisfied by the results given. 

This only proves the excellence of the famous trio filters, especially True HEPA. 

Operation Costs

Three crucial factors while estimating the rentability of an air purifier are the product price, the filter price, and the performance cost. In all three points of view, Levoit Core 400S resulted as a more affordable appliance. 

The initial product price and the filter replacement price are lower, but also the electricity expense. With a power of 38W (28W for the European model), Levoit Core 400S made a 3$ bill by the end of the month. Levoit LV-H134 had a 4.4$ bill for the 45 watts.
