Setup and Installation

The Airdog Pro requires a little more complex preparation before the first start than we have seen in other air purifiers. Freshly bought air purifiers are mostly fully ready to go.

The most important thing to note is that you need to ensure that you have all the necessary parts included in the package that comes with this device. As soon as you have peeled off all the strips that hold the plastic on the Airdog so that it does not fall apart, you move on to the next step, which is the invention of the plate collector, which is very well packaged and comes in a plastic bag. This filter is essential for the safe operation of the device, so unpack it and prepare it for insertion into the air purifier.

Open the cover on the back and insert the plate collector into the space provided. Fortunately, the other filters are already in the machine, so you don’t have to guess where this filter goes. After this step, the Airdog Pro is ready to use; plug it in, make sure it’s at least 20 inches away from walls and other objects, and turn it on.

Additionally, you can connect your air purifier to a smart app, which I’ll explain in more detail in the other part of this review.

Make sure you close the lid tightly and that everything stays in place.

Design

The Airdog Pro features a simple design; it’s white except for the top black part. There is a display, a motion sensor, and a control button on the top. The display is not a touchscreen; it shows the basic information needed for the everyday use of this device.

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Design

I like the carrying handles located on the sides, making it much easier to carry this not-so-light device. As for the plastic and the build quality, I think they are just fine, and I have no complaints. Everything fits well; I have not noticed any problems with the design.

All in all, it is a very lovely air purifier with a slightly unusual design that I think fits into almost any ambiance.

Additionally, I would recommend that you consider carefully where you are going to put the air purifier and whether there will be enough space in the room, as the Airdog Pro is a much larger device than it appears at first sight.

Control Button and Display

The operation panel is located on the top side of the appliance, in the bottom right corner. This panel contains the display, the indicators, the control button, and the motion sensor.

The indicators on the control panel are the power indicator, the auto mode indicator, the Wi-Fi indicator, and the child lock indicator. In addition, the display shows the values of the current speed, the air quality index, the cleaning reminder, and some possible errors that may occur during use.

The control panel is handy, and many options and indicators you see will be used very often. However, if you connect your device to a smart app, you’ll never have to rely on the control panel display.

Airflow

The Airdog Pro is a rectangular air purifier with air inlets on the underside, arranged on three sides, on all sides except the front.

After the air has been drawn through these openings, the air is filtered and exits through the openings on the top of the unit and below the handrail on the sides.

Size and Dimensions

The air purifier weighs 24.9 lb (11,3 kg).

The dimensions of the device are: 26 x 12.8 x 12.8 inches (66 x 32,5 x 32,5 cm).

What’s in the box?

You will receive an Airdog Pro Air Purifier, collection plate, other filters (pre-installed), collection plate cleaning brush, and user manual when you purchase the device.

For special preparation and to make sure you don’t skip any of the steps before starting the device for the first time, I recommend you read the explanation at the beginning of the review, where I describe in detail how to install and configure the Airdog Pro before the first start.

Features Overview

The Airdog Pro is a smart air purifier that comes with many advanced options. Some options are available directly on the device, while others require the air purifier to be connected to a smart app.

The many advanced features that adorn this device make daily use more manageable. You can see the current air quality and enjoy the fully automated work.

Smart App

The smart app is an integral part of this air purifier. It is available on Android and iOS devices, works seamlessly, and is one of the best-rated apps on the market for this purpose.

I would also like to point out that connecting the device to the app is mandatory. The air purifier can work without being connected to the app.

Air Quality Sensor and Indicator

The Airdog Pro uses an advanced air quality sensor mounted on the back of the device. This sensor detects particles in real-time and, when combined with some of the other options, takes the use of the device to the next level.

The current air quality is displayed on the screen in the form of AQI, which stands for Air Quality Index, standardized according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Air Quality Indicator
Air quality indicator. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

The display shows values from 0 to 500, and the table below shows what each value means. In addition to displaying the current AQI on the screen, the Airdog Pro also has an illuminated indicator on the underside of the device that glows a different color depending on the current air quality.

AQI values are also displayed in the smartphone app. In addition, you will see the outdoor AQI displayed in the app based on your location.

How to clean the air quality sensor

The air quality sensor gets dirty very quickly. Still, luckily it’s very easy to reach, so you can clean it of accumulated dust from time to time. By cleaning the sensor, you can ensure that Airdog Pro is always working at its full potential and always displays reliable readings of the current air quality in the room.

The sensor cleaning process is straightforward:

  1. To begin with, you need to open the cover of the air quality sensor.
  2. Then, using alcohol and an ear stick, clean the sensor of any accumulated dust.

Working Modes

This air purifier has several different operating modes: sleep, automatic, and manual.

Sleep mode is a handy feature, which I especially love as I prefer to use an air purifier in my bedroom. In Sleep Mode, the device dims the indicators and reduces the fan speed to a minimum, allowing you to sleep undisturbed while the device is in operation.

Automatic mode is slightly different but no less important. Moreover, this mode is the most advanced and uses the full potential of the Airdog Pro air purifier. In automatic mode, the device will shift the fan speed according to the current air quality in the room.

And finally, the manual mode. You can manually shift one of the four speeds at your disposal.

In my opinion, having so much choice in terms of speed and mode settings is a great advantage and makes day-to-day use much more comfortable. Also, not many air purifiers can boast similar features.

Child Lock

A child lock is an excellent option if you want to lock the air purifier and prevent it from responding to any press of the power button on the machine. The easiest way to activate this option is via the smartphone app, with just one click. In addition, you can activate the child lock option by long-pressing the power button.

Detector

The motion detector is located on the control panel. It is essentially a sensor that detects movement in the room. If Airdog Pro detects that someone is in the room, it will automatically display the AQI value on the screen. Otherwise, after a while, these values are not shown.

Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa Integration

I am glad that Airdog Pro can connect to voice control assistants, both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. As soon as you connect Airdog Pro to a smart app, you have the option in the settings to connect the device to either of these two assistants. This is a handy option that I believe will simplify the use of the device for many users.

Ozone Safe

The Airdog Pro uses an ionizer as part of the filtration stage, which means that this device produces ozone. Airdog produces <10 ppb, which is 5 times less than the industry standard (50 ppb).

It is important to note that the ionization process occurs inside the device. In any case, there is no need to open the device’s lid immediately after switching it off. It is best to wait 10 minutes for the situation to calm down and avoid inhaling large amounts of ozone.

In fact, the Airdog Pro has third-party certificates confirming that the device does not produce illegal amounts of ozone. Although this air purifier is not CARB certified, it is commendable that previous Airdog air purifiers have this certification, so I hope that the Airdog Pro will get it very soon.

Smart APP (Airdog)

The Airdog Pro has the option to connect to a smart app, which is available for Android and iOS devices. Connecting to the app opens up some new features that no one can access directly on the device. In addition, the app offers a graphical interface that displays many options in a very decent and attractive way and, above all, gives you the possibility to control the device from a remote location.

What surprised me positively was that I had no problems connecting the device to the smartphone app. Everything went smoothly and without any delays. I will describe in more detail below how the connection process works and what the app offers. I have tried a lot of smart air purifiers lately; for example, the Levoit Core 400s is also a smart air purifier that connects seamlessly to the app. I really like the fact that brands are improving apps and making it easier for users to connect to the app and just use the app.

Suppose you connect the Airdog to a smart app. In that case, you also get the option to connect the air purifier to voice control apps such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Installation and Initial Settings

Before you can start using the app, you need to download it on your Android or iOS smartphone. After downloading and using the app, Airdog requires you to register in the app using your correct email address.

After registering and confirming your email address, you need to follow the on-screen instructions and connect the air purifier to your smartphone. It is commendable that Airdog can automatically detect the device and, more importantly, seamlessly and almost instantly detect the air purifier.

Connecting the air purifier to the app is also very simple and hassle-free, which is not the case with some competing air purifier apps.

If you have problems, reset the Wi-Fi by holding your finger on the button on the top of the device until the Wi-Fi indicator starts flashing.

Control Options

After connecting to the app, you can control your device via the app and access some additional options that are not available directly on the device. The current AQI is displayed at the top of the screen, merged into a beautiful graphical animation. Kudos to the developers!

Under the AQI display are the buttons for controlling the device, namely the switch, mode, speed, and setting buttons. The purpose of the first three buttons is more than evident. Pressing the Settings button opens a window with a few additional settings.

Here you can find the Child Lock option, the Reset Filter option, the Countdown option, which is essentially a timer, and the Schedule option.

Automation

As I mentioned earlier, Airdog Pro uses the Schedule and Countdown options for primitive control of smart devices, but advanced automation options are also available. Essentially, Airdog Pro allows you to fully program the operation of your device. Let’s say you can set the air purifier to turn on, turn off, or change mode depending on external factors such as temperature, humidity, or weather.

Airdog Pro App - Automation
Smart app automation. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

In addition, you can set the conditions in a much more advanced way. For example, suppose the current air quality in the room is below a value equal to or greater than the desired value. In that case, you can set the device to switch on and change the mode. The app can send you a notification about the air and its work and much more.

These are really very useful options that make the Airdog Pro an ingenious device. I won’t explain each automation in detail; I leave it for you to explore. If you have any uncertainties, please leave a comment in the comment box below the review.

Filtration Technology

TPA technology is the basis of the innovative filtration used in the Airdog Pro air purifier. The Airdog Pro uses a 4-stage filtration system consisting of a pre-filter, a generating electrode, collection plates, and a carbon filter.

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Filters
I opened a filter cover so you can see how Airdog Pro filters are arranged. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

Airdog filters are particular, mostly washable, and require different maintenance procedures than we are used to with traditional filters. Although this filtration system is very different from conventional True HEPA filters, the quality and efficiency of the filtration are at a very high level.

The market for air purifiers is still underdeveloped, so innovations in this market are not that common. Fortunately, brands like Airdog are trying to bring something new to the table. In addition to the many advanced options, sensors, and other fancy stuff, Airdog is trying to innovate in the filtration field.

The TPA technology and washable filters used by Airdog will do a great job of filtering the air in your home and keeping the maintenance costs of the unit to a minimum. I have noticed a similar filtration system in the OneLife X air purifier. I can say that these two air purifiers have very high efficiency and good performance in common.

Pre-filter

The first filtration stage is the pre-filter, designed to trap larger particles like hair, dander, large dust particles, and the like. The pre-filter is very useful as it prevents unnecessary contamination of the other filters and thus allows the device to be more efficient.

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Pre-filter
A pre-filter. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

I recommend cleaning the pre-filter at least once a month, either by washing it with water or vacuuming it.

Generating Electrode

The second filtration stage is the generating electrode, which essentially kills bacteria and microbes. This stage is specific. It does not trap any particles on itself because it destroys them.

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Electrode Generator
A generating electrode. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

Collecting Plates

The third filtration stage is plate collection, which basically collects all harmful particles. The collection plates basically act as an ion filter, which attracts all the particles like a magnet and sticks them to the plates.

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Collecting Plates
A collecting plate. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

You won’t believe how much dust accumulates on the Collecting Plates after just one day of use. It is important to note that the Collection Plates should be washed regularly and not replaced in any way (unless they are visibly damaged).

The TPA®️ aluminum alloy generates an electric field that charges all hazardous substances down to 0.0146 µm (6x less than other air purifiers). The biological waste is then collected by the Collection Plates.

Activated Carbon Filter

The final filtration stage is the activated carbon filter, which is made up of carbon pellets. This stage is the most deserving of odor neutralization.

The carbon filter is not washable, but it is recommended to regenerate it periodically by exposing it to direct sunlight for at least 1-2 hours.

Airdog Pro Filter Maintenance

The Airdog Pro is a particular air purifier that does not require filter replacement (except carbon filters), but does require regular maintenance and cleaning of the other filters in the unit.

I would recommend cleaning the pre-filter on the unit at least once a month by washing in water or vacuuming with a vacuum cleaner. In addition, regular cleaning of the wireframe filter (generating electrodes) is also recommended. It should be borne in mind that this filter is slightly more delicate, so I recommend gentle cleaning with a soft cloth.

Washing the filter in the sink
In the image above, you can see the process of washing the filter in the sink. Video: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

Airdog advises every 3-6 months is a total overhaul; clean all filters and the inside of the device. Airdog will display “-C-“ on the screen as a sign that it is time for a general overhaul. This means that you need to clean all filters, regenerate the carbon filter, and clean the inside of the unit.

Cleaning the Collection Plates

In addition to the standard pre-filter cleaning that I recommend for almost all air purifiers, the Airdog requires a slightly more thorough cleaning of the Collecting Plates, the primary filter in this unit.

If you’re not the type of person who will periodically check to see if it’s time to clean the Collection Plates, the Airdog will notify and alert you that you need to clean the Collection Plates by flashing the Auto Mode indicator in red.

Step 1 – Remove Collecting Plates

Open the back cover and remove the collecting plates from the device.

Step 2 – Wash the Collecting Plates

Unlock and separate the collecting plates. Ideally, rinse the plates with water and scrub them well with the brush supplied with the device.

Step 3 – Dry Collecting Plates

After this, the collection plates should be dried well and placed in the device under no circumstances if they are wet.

Step 4 – Put Them Back

The last step is to reassemble the plates, put them back in place and switch on the air purifier.

After switching off the machine, wait at least 10 minutes before opening the filter cover.

Noise Test

What always appeals to me about air purifiers is the wide choice of speeds and working modes. The Airdog Pro is a complete sensation with 4 fan speeds and an additional sleep mode.

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Noise Test
Noise test. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

There are many benefits to choosing from a range of different speeds. Firstly it makes it easier for users to select the speed that suits them best and tailor it to their needs. In addition, in automatic mode, the machine is much more efficient. It makes the best use of the selected fan speed according to the current air quality.

Speed Value (dBA)
Sleep Mode 44.1 dBA
L1 45.4 dBA
L2 49.1 dBA
L3 55.4 dBA
L4 64.3 dBA

What I do not like about optimizing the motor capacity is the slightly louder operation of the motor in sleep mode, as well as the much louder operation at maximum speed. However, it should be remembered that the Airdog Pro performs best at top speed.

There are undoubtedly many quieter and better-optimized air purifiers on the market. Still, the Airdog Pro performs quite decently, and you will be able to stay in the room without any problems when the machine is switched on. Unless it is switched to maximum speed, which will be too loud for most users.

Performance Tests

The Airdog Pro is an air purifier designed for large rooms, up to 530 sq. ft. (50 m²).

I want to say straight away that the Airdog Pro impressed me with its performance in all the tests I carried out. However, since I had the opportunity to test the Airdog X3, a slightly smaller air purifier from Airdog that also performed excellently, I somehow believed that this model would do just as well.

Airdog Pro Air Purifier - Performance Test
Performance tests. Photo: Airpurifierfirst.com / Milan Antonic

Due to the very high airflow, the Airdog fits perfectly into a living room, a large bedroom, or any room that holds the recommended dimensions. In addition, the Airdog Pro can be used in rooms smaller than the recommended dimensions. The only thing that would be a problem, in this case, is that the device is huge and will take up a lot of space.

What surprised me even more, especially considering the not-so-large carbon filter, is the performance in odor neutralization, where the Airdog Pro proved to be quite decent and achieved outstanding results.

320 sq. ft. (30 m2) Room Test

I tested Airdog Pro in a 320 sq. ft. room, which is much smaller than the recommended dimensions. As I expected, mainly due to the room dimensions, the Airdog Pro performed exceptionally well in this test, improving air quality by approximately 96% in 60 minutes of operation at maximum speed, ranking among some of the best air purifiers tested so far.

# Starting Baseline After 60min
PM 2.5 106.6 4.5
PM 10 149.3 6.3
Particles 154692 6548
AQI 139 6

560 sq. ft. (52 m2) Room Test

In a test in a 560 sq. ft. room, which is almost the same size as recommended, the Airdog Pro also performed very well. In just 60 minutes of operation at maximum speed, this air purifier improved the air quality by approximately 89%, a very good result and an indication that the Airdog Pro performs very well in rooms of the recommended dimensions.

# Starting Baseline After 60min
PM 2.5 92.5 9.9
PM 10 129.5 13.9
Particles 134171 14433
AQI 121 13

Operating Costs

What surprised me, primarily due to the very high airflow, is that the Airdog Pro has a power of only 65W. This air purifier needs only 1.4W of electricity in standby mode, while at first speed, it uses as much as 16.5W.

You’ll agree that the Airdog Pro has minimal power consumption. For example, if you were to leave the Airdog Pro running at maximum speed, 24 hours a day, for a month, your electricity bill would increase by $5.6, which is the same as some air purifiers with similar features, such as the Blueair 211+.

Apart from the cost of electricity, the Airdog Pro has almost no other expenses because most of the filters it uses are washable. The only filter that needs to be replaced is the carbon filter, which cannot be washed but can be renewed by exposure to direct sunlight for 1-2 hours.

All in all, I think that the Airdog has stuck to its purpose of being very maintenance-friendly while doing the job properly and providing the user with excellent performance at the same time.

Speed Power Usage (W)
Standby 1.4W
Sleep Mode 13.5W
L1 16.5W
L2 20.7W
L3 30.9W
L4 63.7W

You stated there are undoubtedly better air purifiers. Please share the names of these. I have an air dog pro and I am not thinking it’s working as well as I would like considering the price. My husband is a heavy smoker and it does help a lot but if there is something better I would like to know. Thank you.

    • Milan Antonic

Hi, the best way to confirm if it works is when cleaning the Collecting Plates. There was a huge amount of dust attached to the Collecting Plates whenever I was cleaning them.

Regarding other suggestions, the Winix 5500-2 is a much better option, with a True HEPA filter and a much better Activated Carbon filter.
